Drinking in History: Section 106 at a Crossroads

One of the nation’s most important historic preservation tools could soon look very different. 

Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act requires federal agencies to consider how federally supported projects may affect historic places—and creates opportunities for Tribal Nations, preservation professionals, local communities, and the public to have a voice in that process. This summer, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation advanced significant proposed revisions to the regulations that govern Section 106, changes that will greatly diminish those voices. Those proposals are now moving through the federal rulemaking process.
